Moxa is a traditional healing technique often used in Chinese/Japanese medicine. It involves the burning of mugwort (a type of herb) near specific points on the body, usually over acupuncture points. The heat from the burning moxa is thought to stimulate circulation, relieve pain, and promote healing. There are different ways to apply moxa—sometimes it's directly on the skin, but often it's used indirectly, with a stick or cone of moxa held near the body to warm the area without direct contact.
It’s commonly used for conditions like joint pain, digestive issues, or to boost overall health. It’s like a form of heat therapy, but with the added herbal benefits.
“I began using moxa during the pandemic when I was dealing with some shoulder pain. Moxa is kind of like taking a daily bath—you might not feel the effects immediately, but over time, it’s really beneficial.” - Kayako
